Task 1 - Preliminary Task

For the first part of my AS Media Studies coursework, i was given an assignment. This required me to form a group in order to create a preliminary task. This consisted of a film clip which was executed using HD hand-held cameras, and tri-pods. The film clip needed to include a match-on-action, the 180 degree rule, a shot-reverse-shot and an eyeline match. Before starting the task, a lesson was delivered which taught us how to sucessfully put these things into action.
The 180 degree rule is very important in the making of films. This is a rule which is essential in the production of professional looking film sequences. When filming, you should aim to keep the camera within 180 degrees on one chosen side of the characters. The camera can be moved up or down, as long as it is within 180 degrees. If the camera is moved to the other side of the characters, then the characters would switch positions, which would disorientate the audience.
A match-on-action is a type of camera shot which is commonly used to show the exchange of an object between two characters within a scene. The object that was used in my group's film clip was an ipod.
An eyeline match is a shot which clearly shows the eye contact between two characters.
A shot-reverse-shot is a camera shot which is frequently used during a conversation between two characters.  It cuts from a shot of one character, to a shot of another character. It is often used to show a change in speaker.
Once the clip was successfully filmed, it was then uploaded onto, and edited on iMovie, where non-diegetic sound and incidental music was added.
